Week 2: Architecture and Urban Planning: Definition -  Architects and Urban Planners: their profession - Needs in both fields

Objectives

At the end of the week students will have:

• discussed their own concepts of architecture and urban planning 
• listened to opinions expressed by other people regarding these fields
• recorded their own opinions
• read  and listened to texts related to the careers of architecture and urban planning
• used vocabulary related to this content in written paragraphs and recordings

Activities

Monday

Definitions

1. Share with your classmates and teacher the definitions you wrote about architecture and urban planning
2. Now, let's listen to what some friends and collegues of mine from different parts of the world think about architecture and urban planning (click on the image below).

    3.  Select two of the messages you listened to, and reply to them:

• write your responses on your wiki, and correct them before recording
• identify the name of the person and the country where s/he lives

    4.   Go to Moodle and do the activities about architecture and urban planning definitions

    5.   Class discussion: What is architecture? What is urban planning? Are they different, similar? how?

    6.  Needs in architecture and urban planning: What are these needs? Are they similar for both fields?

• Listen to this podcast
• Check the section on needs on the Architect Studio 3D: http://architectstudio3d.org/AS3d/design_studio3d.html  (click on "start your design" and then read the needs for every client)
• Get together with a classmate for a chat in YM, and discuss the questions posed in the recording
• Save the chatlog and post it to the chatlog: needs forum in Moodle.
• For homework:
  • Read the text about needs in Moodle, and
  • write your own conclusions on your wiki (open a new page called "needs")

Wednesday

What does it take?

    1.   Discuss with a classmate, and be ready to share with the whole group: 

What does it take to be an architect / urban planner?

   2.   Pre-reading/listening activities for the audio text: "The architect and his profession"

• What can you predict about the content of the text by reading the title?
• What questions will be answered?
• Guess the vocabulary that might be included?

   3.  Complete the poll about what an architect /urban planner needs to know. Results will be discussed. 

   4.  Listen to the podcast and complete the activities indicated

   5.  In class, discuss the answers to the questions asked by the speaker

   6.  Read the text found in Moodle.

   7.  Post-reading:

• Class discussion:How are architecture and urban planning different in terms of the qualifications needed for each?
• Answer the following questions as comments on the podomatic blog: cities and buildings

a)  After today's reading, how do you feel about your future profession?

b)  What is the role of architects / urban planners in today's world?

Homework: Re-read the text "The architect and his profession" and complete the worksheet found in Moodle.  Don´t forget to bring it next class.
